Aikido is a Japanese martial art which is ideal for children as it is dynamic, fun and strengthens young bodies without putting unnecessary strain on developing joints. Children who study Aikido develop and expand their mental and physical awareness while learning cooperation and respect for others. Instruction begins with exercises to stretch and strengthen young bodies and to improve attention, coordination and motor skills. Rolling and falling with confidence is a big part of training. Children are taught to fall safely in a variety of ways. Once the children have learned to fall, they learn the principles of movement which allow them to practice techniques with partners. Because Aikido is a non-competitive art the focus of study is on mutual learning and teamwork while having fun! The more experienced children are encouraged to assist the newer students in developing their skills. Through training, children learn to react calmly to aggression and Aikido can be a powerful aid in the formation of character, self-discipline and self-confidence. At Athens Aikido we offer classes to children of ages 4 and up taught by Jenny Flower, a fully qualified teacher, ranked 5th degree black belt by Birankai International. She is assisted by Theodore Tempos, ranked 2nd degree black belt and Aris Kapetanakis,1st degree black belt.
